Abstract
Introduction: Temperature and humidity are one of the main factors of seed germination, which determines the rate of germination of uninjured seeds. Therefore, this research was carried out to investigate the effect of temperature and time of seed placement at different temperatures on the seed germination characteristics of barley cultivar Khorram.
Materials and Methods: The experiment was conducted as factorial based on randomized complete design with four replications in Seed Laboratory of Gonbad-e-Kavous University in 2014. The experimental treatments included temperature range at two levels (25, 30, 35 and 40°C) and time of seeds placement in oven (24, 48, 72, 96 h). Traits such as total fresh and dry weight of seedlings, roots and germinated seeds, seedling length, root length and germination parameters were measured.
Results: The results showed that the effect of temperature and interactions of temperature and time of seeds placement in oven on germination percentage, germination percentage per day, germination index, germination rate index and seed germination rate of barley were significant; however, the time of seed placement in oven was not significant on other germination characteristics except for the germination rate index. According to the mean comparison of effect of interactions between temperature and duration, the best germination percentage, germination percentage per day, germination index, germination rate index, and germination rate of barley seeds were obtained in temperature of 30°C with 24 hours of seed placement in oven.
Conclusion: According to the results, increasing the temperature from 30°C to the high, as well as increasing the time of seeding at different temperatures from 24 hours to high reduced the germination indices, that indicating the effect of environmental stresses (temperature) on reducing the germination rate of barley seeds.
