Effect of temperature and osmotic potential on germination of broomrape (Orobanche aegyptiaca) seeds
Abstract:   (17682 Views)

Parasitic weed species of the Orobanche genus are serious threats to the production of several crops in Europe, Africa and Asia.

This study was conducted at Aarhus University in 2011 to investigate the effects of different temperatures andosmotic potential on seed germination of Egyptian broomrape (Orobanche  aegyptiaca). Treatments included six levels of temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40oC) and five levels of osmotic potentials (0, -0.3, -0.6, -0.9 and -1.2 MPa) and control (distilled water). The treatments were placed in a factorial arrangement in a compeletely randomized design with four replications. Results showed that germination percentage and the range of optimum temperature reduced by declining osmotic potential. The lowest germination percentage (57%) was occurred at -1.2 MPa. Also, decreasing the osmotic potential caused delay in the beginning, intermediate and maximum of germination. Germination percentage was the highest (94.2%) at 20oC and the lowest (26.4%) at 35 oC. Maximum and minimum germination rate was achieved at 30oC and 10oC, respectively. Minimum, optimum  and maximum temperatures for germination were 5.6, 30.1 and 40 oC, respectively.
