Effects of different sources of potassium on drought tolerance of maize under deficit irrigation management

Abstract
Introduction: Potassium is one of the elements that increase the resistance of plants to water deficit. Therefore, supply of potassium by considering the environmental relations is very important in achieving the goals of sustainable agriculture. Thus, this experiment was conducted with the aim of investigation the effects of various potassium sources on maize drought resistance.
Materials and methods: In order to evaluate the effects of different potassium fertilizer on drought tolerance of maize, an experiment was carried out as split plot based on randomized complete block design with 3 replicates in summer 2016. Investigated treatments were include management of deficit irrigation as a main plots contained: 1) full furrows irrigation (control), 2) fixed alternate furrows irrigation and 3) variable alternate furrows irrigation and potassium fertilizer resources as sub-plots contained: 1) all by potassium sulphate (control), 2) all by solupotasse and 3) 50% of potassium sulphate and the rest of it by bio-fertilizer potabarvar2. In this experiment, several traits such as total dry matter, crop growth rate, net absorption rate and grain yield were measured.
Results: The results showed that irrigation management and different sources of potassium fertilizer, had significant effects on total dry matter, crop growth rate, net absorption rate and grain yield. The maximum grain yield (5463 kg/h) in terms of full furrow irrigation (control) + combined use of bio-fertilizer + chemical fertilizer, and the minimum grain yield (2966 kg/h) in terms of fixed furrow irrigation + consumption solupotasse were obtained.
Conclusion: In general, in area with deficit water recourses, the variable alternate furrow irrigation management and the consumption of combined biological and chemical fertilizers in addition to be produce sufficient crop production, also can reduce consumption of chemical fertilizers and this gives a substantial contribution to a healthy environment.
