Influences of long term application of organic and chemical fertilizers on yield and competition indices of basil and sesame in different planting patterns

In order to investigate the efficiency of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) and sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) intercropping under long term application of organic fertilizers, a field experiment was carried out in a split plot based on a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main factors included the fertilizer in six levels consisted of 20 and 40 ton ha-1 of sewage sludge and municipal waste compost enriched with 50% chemical fertilizer needed by soil, chemical fertilizer treatment alone (100 kg ha-1 of urea, triple super phosphate and potassium sulfate) and control (no fertilizer application) and the sub factors were different planting ratio in five levels consisted P1: sole cropping of basil, P2: 75% basil+25% sesame, P3: 50% basil+50% sesame, P4: 25% basil+75% sesame and P5: sole cropping of sesame. Regarding the significant effects of fertilizer and intercropping pattern interaction on ecological yield and land equivalent ratio, the 25% basil+75% sesame and 50% basil+50% sesame had the maximum ecological yield (up to 4091 kg ha-1) and land equivalent ratio (LER= 1.21 and LER= 1.29, respectively). Also, the most basil and sesame relative crowding coefficient K=1.68 and K= 2.07, respectively was belonged to 40 mg ha-1 enriched sewage sludge application. Among different intercropping patterns, the highest sesame relative crowding coefficient (K= 1.54) was observed in 25% sesame+75% basil intercropping. The mean comparison of fertilizer and planting ratio interaction effects on basil and sesame relative crowding coefficient indicated that the maximum relative crowding coefficient of basil (A= +0.27) and sesame (A= +0.44) were belonged to the 25% basil+75% sesame and 25% sesame+75% basil, respectively under 40 mg ha-1 enriched sewage sludge application. In conclusion, sesame in 25% sesame+75% basil and basil in 25% basil+75% sesame under different fertilizer treatments were dominant species and their aggressively value was positive. |
