Abstract
Introduction: Drought stress as an important abiotic stress has plays an important role in reducing crop production. To evaluate the effect of drought stress on morphological and agronomic traits of 8 wheat cultivars, the experiment was conducted in the autumn of 2013 at Gonbad-e-Kavous city.
Materials and Methods: This experiment was carried out as a factorial based on randomized complete block design and with 4 replications. Wheat cultivars (Morvarid, Gonbad, N-87-20, N-90-12, Koohdasht, Line17, Karim and Zagros) were evaluated in two conditions of rainfed and supplemental irrigation. Characteristics such as: the number of days to maturity, plant height, peduncle length, spike length, grain yield, biological yield and harvest index were measured.
Results: The results showed that the wheat cultivars were significant difference in terms all studied traits except for harvest index. Also, the effect of supplemental irrigation was significant on terms all studied traits except for harvest index and peduncle length. On the other hand, the interaction of cultivars × environment interaction was not significant for terms all traits except for biological yield. The interaction of wheat cultivars was different in both conditions, so that drought stress reduced terms all studied traits, especially grain yield (19.72%) and biological yield (18.52%). Although the existence of stress conditions reduced the grain yield in different cultivars compared to the supplemental irrigation conditions, but it was observed that some of the cultivars under dry conditions tolerated of drought stress and had relatively acceptable yield. Using correlation coefficients, relationships between traits under rainfed conditions and supplemental irrigation were investigated and identified properties such as plant height and length of peduncle can to be involved in drought tolerance.
Conclusion: In general, most of the studied traits showed negative effects on dry matter and showed the highest damage in grain yield. The most resistant cultivar to drought stress in terms of seed yield was line17 cultivar. According to the results of research and data, application of supplemental irrigation in rainfed wheat had a significant effect on increased grain yield.
